time for the annual entry

not that much has changed...

- going to dominican republic next week for a new construction project.  this marks my 4th trip in 5 years.  i can't adequately capture in words exactly the draw of the place but all i know is i morph into this optimal version of myself; always bright-faced, grateful, generous, free-spirited in an of course, non-ned flanders type of way.  i attribute the transformation to: the overwhelming generosity of the Dominicans who humble me daily, the kickass rice/beans/mangos/pineapples/chicken/plantains, freedom from cell phones, emails, commuting, subway noise, bills, work meetings, rudeness, boring daily routine.  instead, we put in a good 9 hours moving buckets of dirt and rock.  all the basic, primitive things that the first workers used to do back in the day.  honest labor that makes you feel human and of worth and tied to the earth like characters from a pearl buck novel.

- work is going pretty well.  i love my co-workers to death and can now call them actual friends.  friends where if they needed help moving i'd be there in a flash. isn't that the ultimate test?  moving in ny is one of the most dreadful things in life.

things i'm looking forward to before my trip:

- shake shack burger / milkshake meetup.

-  ny roadrunners race bright/early this wkend.  4 miler.

- final soccer game on monday.  i'm desperate to score a goal this season. need to hunt down those magic pants or the lucky quarters from 3 years ago...

Bobby Lee
on Korean history lessons:

"(My dad) grew up during the Korean War and I grew up in San Diego.  When I was a kid, I told him 'My friend Billy fell off his skateboard.  He broke his ankle, and now he can't skateboard anymore.' My dad would be like, "Oh yeaaaaaah?  OOOOOH!  Big deal!  My friend during the Korean War - his head blew up!  Now he can't comb his hair!"
